Inspiration
Rhett is building a platform and delivery system for 4K movies, AAA games and VR that includes a patented innovative 2D visual discovery tool. He wants to explore how the tool would look/work in 3D VR space. Job is a 3D modeller who is studying VR and interested in how search/discovery would work in 3D VR space. Corey is a story teller who sees the potential of both.
What it does
Displays the results of a discovery process for movies and enables further discovery based on those results.
How we built it
We don't have a VR developer/coder in the team but we do have a pretty good 3D modeller (Job). So we built a PoC by wrapping the 2D discovery results around a sphere and animating an example user experience.
Challenges we ran into
Tried to implement in A Frame but requires a square "texture" image that is filled to the edges to replicate properly. We don't have that at the moment.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Fairly quickly canvassing high level, critical issues, arriving at consensus and building an effective and achievable PoC with the resources we have in the time frame.
What we learned
We need a VR dev!!!
What's next for 3D/VR seach, discovery and display of results
The sphere isn't the final answer. It worked better than expected but revealed some challenges in 3D VR UX. We have an image of the next iteration that we think will move the experience forward considerably. We need to hook a responsive VR front end to the existing discovery engine and animate the next concept as a working demonstrable product.
