Inspiration

The 3D Smart Traffic and Parking Management System was inspired by the need to streamline urban traffic and parking management, especially in busy cities like Melbourne. We wanted to design a solution that provides real-time insights, seamless navigation, and proactive alerts to reduce congestion and parking hassles. This vision pushed us to harness real-time data and 3D visuals for an innovative, user-friendly approach to smart city management.

What it does

Our system provides a 3D, real-time view of traffic and parking. The app shows Melbourne traffic conditions, indicating congestion levels and available routes. Users can toggle different map layers, view 3D building models, and access nearby parking spots with navigation directions. The app also includes real-time alerts, notifying users of nearby parking and traffic conditions, helping them make timely decisions.

How we built it

We built the app using Mapbox GL JS for mapping, displaying traffic and parking data on an interactive, 3D-enabled map. Real-time traffic information is pulled from the TomTom Traffic API, while parking data is sourced from the Open Data Melbourne City API. We used Microsoft Fabric for data management, implementing data pipelines to feed data into our app and a data lakehouse for storage. The app’s alert functionality is powered by Microsoft Fabric’s real-time intelligence features, offering up-to-the-minute information directly to users.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating multiple APIs for real-time updates was challenging, especially with varying data refresh rates and formats. Setting up pipelines in Microsoft Fabric to provide the data from our sources into the lakehouse also required extensive troubleshooting. Connecting these elements to our local web app and fine-tuning alerts took substantial effort, as we needed both accuracy and efficiency for a seamless user experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to have successfully implemented a comprehensive 3D view of Melbourne’s traffic and parking landscape. Achieving real-time alerts, along with real-time mapping and a polished UI, was a significant milestone. Building an end-to-end solution using Microsoft Fabric and Mapbox GL JS, integrating complex data sources, and making it user-friendly is an accomplishment we’re excited about.

What we learned

This project taught us the complexities of real-time data processing and visualization, especially in using Microsoft Fabric for data integration and pipeline management. We gained a deeper understanding of spatial data mapping with Mapbox GL JS and learned to optimize API integration for performance. Working through these technical challenges also strengthened our problem-solving skills and collaboration.

What's next for 3D Smart Traffic and Parking Management System

Looking ahead, we plan to enhance the system by incorporating predictive analysis, which can forecast traffic conditions based on historical patterns. We also aim to add more granular parking data, such as the exact number of available spaces. Our long-term goal is to extend this solution to cover multiple cities and expand our app's capabilities with AI-driven insights and broader Microsoft Fabric integrations.
