3D Model Solar System

Inspiration

I have always been interested in space and wanted to create a unique centerpiece for a personal portfolio website. I also knew that I wanted to work with the three.js 3D framework so this was the perfect project to do that.

What it does

Models the solar system with realistic planetary sizes, rotations, and orbits. Distances and size of the Sun is not to scale.

How we built it

Three.js 3D framework was used to model and animate.

Challenges we ran into

I was new to the three.js framework so there was a bit of a learning curve.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of coming up with an idea and building it from start to finish. I did not initially plan to do a model solar system but once I got the idea I was able to execute and get it done.

What we learned

I learned a lot about the three.js framework and 3D graphics. I also learned a lot about the solar system!

What's next for 3D Model Solar System

The 3D model itself is mostly complete but there could be minor tweaks added. A fully realistic model could be in store in the future. My plan is to use this model in a personal portfolio website as a background with camera animations based on user scrolling. I may simply add it to a portfolio site as a side project if I decide to go a different direction with my homepage.
