Inspiration
When I was in college, like other students, I thought I knew what I was going to do. What happened was Nursing -> Psychology -> ?. During my year at college I ended up taking art classes for the non core credits. I fell in love with photography and art. The classes changed how I view many things in the real world.
After meeting many people who were actually art majors and reading up on things that could help me develop my self as a creator, I came across something most creatives should do. Small projects. All the tips, guides and articles online advise readers to create small projects for your self to keep, develop and sharpen your skills.
An example of a small project is: 1 Photo of your self (selfie) each day for a year. Then you take all the photos and compile them into a video, collection or etc
or 1 large drawing of something important a week for a year
This forces someone to continually produce work and practice their skills.
What it does
365 is a basic web app that allows you to create collections and upload images(for now). Creating Monthly(12 entries), Weekly(52 entries), or Daily(365 entries) projects.
How I built it
I built 365 using RoR. Stored images on aws s3. deployed on Heroku. Used the Devise gem for accounts and paperclip gem to handle photo attachments.
Challenges I ran into
As a beginner creating the models and making sure the correct relationships were in place. Then getting the appropriate data and visually displaying them was the next.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Even at its current state i'm still happy about this. The app works with logging in and uploading and displaying the photos
What I learned
Building a site with the current functions right now was hard for a beginner. This project gave me a small glimpse into building a full scale web app alone and the amount of time and work that needs to be put into this.
What's next for 365
Once finished with the landing page and the about page I may want to edit the way other users can view each others work.
I do want to continue to work on this over time however I would like to move forward. Other apps.
