Inspiration
Classic Othello is engaging, but limited by its 8x8 board. We wanted to challenge that constraint and explore what happens when strategy is scaled massively—hence, 32x32 Reversi.
What it does
32x32 Reversi is a supersized twist on the traditional Othello game. It supports full gameplay logic, turn management, piece flipping, and endgame detection on a 1024-cell board.
How we built it
We built it using React 19 with Tailwind CSS for UI and Devvit for Reddit-based deployment. Game logic is handled in TypeScript, with efficient board state management and animation using tween.js.
Challenges we ran into
Handling performance on a 32x32 grid was tricky—especially updating large board states in React without lag. We also had to optimize piece flipping logic and game-over detection efficiently.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully implemented a smooth, large-scale board game that feels natural and responsive. The UI remains clean, and the game logic is robust, even at this unprecedented scale.
What we learned
We learned how to scale classic game mechanics, manage performance-intensive rendering in React, and leverage Devvit for building Reddit-native experiences.
What's next for 32 x 32 Reversi
We plan to add AI opponents and Reddit leaderboard integration to enhance engagement and replayability.
