Inspiration
2Niche was originally inspired by games like Skyrim where a map marker would point the player to an interesting location off the beaten path. 2Niche started there and pivoted from a gamified mobile app to a web app.
What it does
2Niche finds locations within a certain radius of the user and sorts them by the amount of reviews, removing the highest quarter of reviews from the search and displaying the other choices to the user. Users may additionally sort by rating, radius, and keyword.
How we built it
2Niche was constructed using Flask as a web framework and Bootstrap to assist the front end side of development.
Challenges we ran into
The 2Niche team has encountered numerous issues setting up the development environment. The initial plan was to develop the app for mobile but differences in hardware prevented development in that direction. Additionally, the choice of framework moved from Django to Flask halfway through the Hackathon partly due to technical difficulties, partly because it's a better fit for the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
What we learned
Everyone in the group learned the importance of git and the consequences of handling it improperly. Additionally, the entirety of the team learned an entirely new framework, whether it was Django, or Flask, or both, alongside bootstrap.
What's next for 2Niche
The next step for 2Niche would likely be to implement a cleaner UI/UX, a database for users, and a machine learning model for making suggestions better suited to the user.
