Inspiration
Secondtree was inspired by a real and deeply personal challenge shared by van-lifers and digital nomads:
dating and making friends becomes incredibly difficult when your life is always moving.
Quin Gable, described it perfectly, connection can feel like finding a needle in a haystack when one person is traveling and the other is staying put.
Van life is full of freedom, nature, and exploration, but it can also feel lonely. Traditional dating apps are built for people who stay rooted in one place, not for people whose lives are constantly on the road.
That’s where the name Secondtree comes from:
Just like a tree, meaningful relationships take time, trust, and roots.
Secondtree is about finding the people you can grow with, wherever you roam.
What it does
Secondtree is a dating and community app built specifically for van-lifers, travelers, and nomads to connect through:
- Nomadic Dating — meet people who also live life on the move
- Activity-Based Friend Finding — connect through shared interests like hiking, climbing, skiing, and adventure
- Match by Destination — discover connections based on where you are and where you’re headed next
- Local Events & Meetups — turn stops into real-world community experiences
- Safe, Intentional Community Design — built with trust, verification, and traveler safety in mind
Secondtree is more than swiping — it’s about building meaningful relationships that can grow roots across the journey.
How we built it
Secondtree was developed by adapting an already fully functioning dating and events platform and redesigning it specifically for the nomadic lifestyle.
The project includes:
- Location-based discovery and matching
- Event creation and meetup flows
- Messaging and connection features
- A new brand identity centered on nature, growth, and community
- A landing page and waitlist built in Framer
Secondtree is designed to scale into a trusted home for travelers, powered by subscription infrastructure through RevenueCat.
Challenges we ran into
Building Secondtree required solving problems that traditional dating apps don’t consider:
- How do you match people who don’t stay in one city?
- How do you help travelers build real connection, not just temporary swipes?
- How do you design for trust and safety in a small, protective community?
A major focus was ensuring Secondtree feels intentional — a place where relationships can take root, even in a lifestyle built on movement.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Created a niche dating + community experience specifically for van life
- Built destination-based connection and meetup-first product positioning
- Delivered a complete brand inspired by growth, nature, and roots
- Designed around trust, verification, and intentional community values
- Shipped quickly with a clear mission: connection for life on the road
What we learned
Secondtree reinforced an important lesson:
The best products aren’t built for everyone, they’re built deeply for someone.
Van-lifers and nomads don’t need another generic dating app.
They need a platform designed for movement, safety, and shared lifestyle.
Secondtree showed how powerful it is to build something that helps people feel grounded, even when they’re always traveling.
What's next for 2ndtree

- Launching the full mobile experience to the growing van-life community
Secondtree’s goal is simple:
Help travelers find their second tree, someone to grow with, and build roots with, wherever the road takes them.
