Inspiration

Work, school or college can be challenging sometimes, so we set out on a mission to help people alleviate stress through gaming. We wanted to bring attention and a higher demand back to 2D game, where some people quote 2D games as 'flat and unrealistic', with 'limited games controls.' In order to prove that this is not true for 2D games, we took the theme of beautiful, nostalgic pixel arts and incorporated it with a plethora of effects, aesthetically pleasing characters with distinct game controls like double jumps and speed bursts to enhance the player experience.

How we built it

We used Godot for our game engine, with our simple character sprites and scenes from the internet. Even though it is a 2D game, we implemented elements of realism and help people feel immersed in the environment. We delved into creating a simple yet enjoyable storyline that anyone can enjoy and play over a busy day after work.

What it does

We kept it simple: SuburbanRunner is a two-dimensional platform game that follows Crimson as they navigate through the defined setting, completing tasks and challenges. We believe and prioritize simplicity that can reach the audience heart.

Challenges we ran into

The most critical challenge we ran into was designing the storyline. We wanted the game to be simple and not overloaded with aspects that would clutter the gameplay and make it a task for the users to play rather than something they enjoy. The second challenge would be collecting the appropriate resources to make our game look and perform well.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have combined the elements of classic platform games with a twist and a different story/narrative. Crafting a distinct yet familiar experience with our game and the character adds both engagement and depth for the user. Different visual cues, and powerups make it an enjoyable experience for the user, making the game feel rewarding.

What we learned

As a part of this exercise, we learned a great deal about the strenuous effort that goes behind crafting even a basic game from scratch and how to balance mechanics in a simple way. Designing a platform game was challenging and persuaded us to think about the player experience through a critical lens and subsequently make it enjoyable. It taught us several skills which would prove beneficial for future game development.

What's next for 2D fun game!!!

In the future, we would like to expand on our game by creating more levels for the user, with other environments and new mechanics in the game accompanied by new abilities that the main character has. Apart from that, we may create a more diverse and exhaustive storyline that adds more depth to the game.
