Inspiration
Most of the people being locked at home have right now a lot of time to start something new, something they wanted to do for years, but never had time for. There is the special number - 21 - how many times one has to repeat an activity to make it her/his habit. Why not start playing the guitar right now that we have time for it? On the other hand, we have realized that people now have a lot of insecurities about the future, so they don't want to spend too much extra money. The idea is to make it possible for people to rent needed products for 21 days and develop a habit. If they didn't like it, they can return the product after 21 days.
What it does
The small, local businesses (because we only want to include those) get a way to offer their products in the time of social isolation. In this way they solve the problem of liquidity. People have a chance to do something interesting. Maybe additionally the owner of the shop would give a workshop online, how to play guitar ?
How I built it
As we are a team of sustainability and marketing experts, we need support by developing the app or website.
Challenges I ran into
See above: a developer urgently needed!! Devaluation: The products can get destroyed, devaluated or stolen. How can we solve it? Are deposits a solution or can you think of another way to make people take care of rented products? Rebuy: Do people want to buy products that have already been used? When the prize is lower - why not? Look how successful Ebay-Kleinanzeigen is. Transportation: Who delivers the product to the customer, that is, the habit learner?
Longterm effects
In our opinion, this project has a potential to have a longterm positive effect on peoples consumption habits. Renting and sharing are much more sustainable consumption patterns than buying. E.g. for a clothing industry, people might realize they don't need that many clothes and they can change their cloth-collection more often, when instead of buying they rent cloths.
Marketing
One of the phenomena that has also inspired us is the fact, that people are in fact very social and do/buy a lot of things just to show off. In times of social isolation the possibilities are rather limited, but one can observe a huge wave of "showing off" on social media. In this context, we want to spread the #21dayschallenge - people can show the things that they have rented, what they've done with them, if the habit really got established. If it gets viral, the users could report everyday how far they are with the habit development, what would be a free marketing for the local business.
What's next for 21-day-challenge
We're desperately searching for a software developer, as none of us can program. In the meanwhile we're brainstorming on which platforms we can use as a base and how it could be managed on the existing platforms.
