Inspiration
SimplyPut Engine was created pretty short after we discovered the theme for this year's Hackhive. We decided on creating a text simplifier, and took it to the next level by allowing users to understand the subtleties that can easily get lost in translation between two different languages. Fueled by our own struggles with comprehending academic English articles, and learning a second language, SimplyPut was made for people all around the world!
What it does
SimplyPut Engine takes academic or complex articles and simplifies the given text down to the user's English comprehension level as graded by the CEFR's Standards. It also can identify cultural slang, idioms, or common phrases, and explains the meaning and how an English speaker would use it. This feature also works on idioms from other languages and can translate the meaning into English, allowing communication that transcends cultural borders.
How we built it
SimplyPut was built in large part thanks to Microsoft Foundry's Azure OpenAI. Paired with StreamLit library, SimplyPut Engine offers a simple user interface with accessible buttons and sliders for ease-of-use!
Challenges we ran into
Coming into this HackHive, none of us knew how to integrate an Ai API into a program, let alone bring our code outside the VS code terminal! This whole project was a massive opportunity to learn through doing, and our mistakes only accelerated our learning.
