Inspiration
The inspiration behind this project was to create an app that takes you on a journey similar to that of the Odyssey. While a few ideas were discussed and considered we decided that a pub crawl would be the most applicable for students and was the best balance of an app to take you on an adventure while also generating enough interest from users.
What it does
The app allows groups of friends to join a group, The leader of the group will be able to choose a start point, end point and number of pubs they want to visit for the pub crawl. The app will then randomly generate a path towards the end point stopping at the number of pubs that was specified. There will be a challenge to every member of the group to upload a photo of themselves at the end of each pub. These photos will be shared amongst the group and will also be given a rating and an "insult" from our LLM "drunk rating".
Challenges we ran into
We ran into issues when defining the type of pub or bar we wanted to go to on the crawl. Google api originally included restaurants and leisure activities that served alcohol. However, this is not really appropriate for a pub crawl so we made sure to refine it down to just pubs. After many tests we are now confident this is the case. Ran into problems with the ai "Drunk scale" as we ran tests using selfies of us sober and older photos of us drunk. The ai originally stated that sober us appeared slightly intoxicated while an image of one of us passed out on the floor was said to be sober and "relaxed". We fine tuned it and ran many more tests until we were happy it was getting accurate results most of the time. Additionally, the coordinate locations of the pubs and the direct distance between them proved to be a slight problem. to find the distance between the pub location we then used the Haversine equation to find the distances between the pubs. This was quite hard to understand but we got there in the end.
What's next for 2025: A Beer Odyssey
We want to continue testing until we are 100% confident in the product. Then we will release it to the public.
