Inspiration

According to a study about the city centers of Paris, people continue to live within a 20 minute radius of their home. Taking this as an insight into how we experience the cities we live in quite uniquely determined by our homes, 20 minute maps allows you to make better choices for your next stay within a city or planned movement.

What it does

20 Minute Maps shows a map visualization of different layers how far 20 minutes can take you. The layers represent way by foot, public transport, taxi and bike.

As a user you can now see how your stay in a city will actually look like if you choose to move to a specific map coordinate location.

Killer Feature 1 Now an overall quality of life score is being calculated by taking average ratings of various categories of surrounding places. Parks, restaurants, entertainment, cultural institutions, shopping possibilities will cumulatively tell you how much you can expect when living in street x number x.

Killer Feature 2 You will get nearby apartment offerings and AirBnB rentals that are very close to your map point request. These can be affiliate links sustaining the platform.

Killer Feature 3 The insight data can also be used for cities to understand their mobility eco system better for future city planning. A more advanced mode could be built for city planners.

How we built it

  • Esri API, some calculation script
  • Google maps locations API, taking location data (e.g. amount of restaurants in area, restaurants with more than 4.4 stars, average pricing)
  • node.js backend for search queries
  • react.js frontend map interface
  • simple lifestyle algorithm as an embedded function javascript.

Challenges we ran into

Making a performant calculation after requesting a coordinate. Gathering public transport data.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Making it happen in that short time. Coming up with a round concept. Dealing with the teams, being together for the first time. Interesting new roles for everyone :) :)
