Backstory
In the harmonious lake of Bath, there dwelled two ducks, Dumbleduck and Ganduck, who were sworn enemies. This year, the Golden Easter Egg Hunt would determine who was the ultimate wizard of all. When the golden egg appeared on the distant bank, both ducks saw it as their chance to claim victory. The race was on, and the competition became a thrilling test of both speed and strategy.
Inspiration
The inspiration for 2 Quack 2 Furious came from a love for classic 2D games and a desire to blend humor with engaging gameplay. We were inspired by classic platformer games and ducks, particularly ducks, to create a fun and fast-paced experience. The main characters were inspired by the mascot of Bath Hack 2025. The legendary rivalry between Ganduck and Dumbleduck added a unique twist, drawing from fantasy and wizardry themes to give the game an exciting backstory.
What it does
2 Quack 2 Furious is a 1v1 competitive platformer where players control two wizard ducks, Dumbleduck and Ganduck, as they race to claim the golden egg. The objective is to be the first to reach the end of each level, using parkour skills and power-ups to outpace your opponent while dodging deadly obstacles.
How we built it
We built 2 Quack 2 Furious using GameMaker language, leveraging its powerful tools and features to bring our game to life. For the visual design, we used Photoshop and Pixilart to create detailed pixel art to match the game’s playful and dynamic aesthetic. The combination of GameMaker's capabilities and our custom artwork helped us create a visually engaging and immersive experience for players.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we faced was getting familiar with GameMaker within a short period, as it was the team’s first time using the software. Additionally, we encountered difficulties with collision detection, which required fine-tuning to ensure smooth gameplay. Designing the graphics also proved challenging, as we had to master pixel art techniques while maintaining a consistent and visually appealing style throughout the game.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the progress we have made given the short time period. We managed to accomplish all of our goals and create a game using software we hadn't used before, all while making it as interactive and fun as possible. We are especially proud of the great backstory integrated into the game - the legendary tale of Dumbleduck and Ganduck.
What we learned
We have learned throughout the process how to use GameMaker to create a 2D game. For our graphics we explored various techniques to create pixel art. We also utilised GitHub for source control enabling collaboration as a team.
What's next for 2 Quack 2 Furious
In the future, we plan to expand 2 Quack 2 Furious by implementing more levels, power ups and modifiers. In addition, we would like to add cut scenes after each level based on which wizard duck has won the round. Leading towards an epic battle scene against Dumbleduck and Ganduck at the end, to crown the ultimate wizard of all. We are also working towards setting up a leaderboard for the fastest times to complete the game.
