Inspired by the blog post of Prusa Research about a DIY Faceshield design they did in the czech republic thousands of people designed and printed faceshields this weekend. We wanted to produce and test exisiting designs and validate these designs.
For Whom are we making
- PPE for hospitals
- other doctors and shopworkers
Things we made
Faceshields
Prusa Design (Mang)
* [source](https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/25857-prusa-protective-face-shield-rc2)
* RC1
* ~2 hours printing time
* Does not fit properly over glasses
* Works well, looks nice
* Tried with a thin (0,1mm?) sheet
* Sheet crumples (with thin sheet)
* Tried with 0,8mm PET from OBI
* Feels very sturdy
* Elastic band is available at some grocery stores (Wenco Breitelastic, 2 Meter, waschbar, 2€, 70% Polyester, 30% Elastodien)
* Laser cuts OK
* Lots of off gassing
* Cut outline with scissors (because of small laser cutting area and fumes) and laser cut holes
* Can use a drill to make the holes
* 8mm drill bit
* Some gap because the pins are oval, not round
* Must be very precise! Printed template at 100% (2 pages taped edge to edge, tiled in Illustrator). Used center punch to mark hole locations
* Since the 0,8mm PET comes on a roll it already has a curved shape - I did not find the bottom printed piece to be necessary
* Takes a lot of space in backpack - put into a tote bag?
* 4 pieces fit on Prusa i3 build plate
* Prints very easily if you have Prusa i3, PETG and Prusa textured build sheet
* RC2
* ~2.5 hours (only printing top piece)
* Only 2 fit on Prusa i3 build plate
* Materials
* A4 laser copy sheet? https://www.amazon.de/OfficeTree%C2%AE-Blatt-hochwertige-Overhead-Folie-Projektions-Qualit%C3%A4t/dp/B0773LXTFJ/
Lasercut only Design (Andreas)

* PET 0.5 bought from a role in a department store
* 9.99 € for 1,25x1m
* difficult to cut as it wobbles
* needs to get pinned to the laser bed
* needs to be redesigned so no square cuts because there it would crack
* cut time 2 min
* assemples in 2 min
* can be mass produced
* maybe add EVA Foam on top
DIY Shield without Machines

* A4 0.3 PVC
* we have not tested this design
Masks
- we also wanted to make masks as a faceshield should not be used alone but we did not have time to look at facemask designs
- Fortunately Alex a member of erfindergarden made a facemask with his mom
- github
Tools we used
- Lasercutter, 3D Printer, Sissors, Drill
Messages / Sharing our experience
- You probably don't have everything that is in any given design - be creative with what you have!
- Don't just make one for yourself, make more and give them away (safely)!
- If you buy materials, make sure to use it all for shields to share!
- Think about sanitary conditions before giving items to other people
- If companies make 5000, Makerspaces make 500, and you make 10 we'll help make a difference
Whats Next?
- test test test
- test with beard, glasses, man and woman, long hear
- get a validation from a German hospital
- think about one professional design that will be produced in Fablabs and Makerspaces and one DIY Design that can be produced at home
we are already help of makers in Belgians who got a request to make 7500 shields validate there design *be ready with Materials, a validated design and a production plan when the requests come in Germany
