In the late 80s I got a Macintosh and was completely fascinated by the strange little black-and-white worlds people could make with HyperCard. As a kid, I would get lost in tiny adventure games, interactive stories, secret rooms, weird experiments, and hand-drawn 1-bit experiences that felt much bigger than the screen they lived on.

Those experiences had a huge impact on me. They made computers feel personal. A few pixels, a button, some text, and a little logic could become a place.

That feeling stayed with me as I became a developer. Over time, tools got more powerful, but they also got more complicated. The old magic of quickly sketching an idea, linking a few screens together, and making something interactive started to feel harder to find.

That is why I built 1BitCards*.

1BitCards is a tiny 1-bit maker for interactive stories and games. You can draw scenes, add buttons and text, script behavior, and connect cards together into playable worlds. It is built around the charm of simple black-and-white pixels and the joy of making something interactive without a giant toolchain.

At its core, 1BitCards is a love letter to the creative computer experiences that shaped me as a kid. That era may have come and gone, but I still think there is something special about 1-bit art, curiosity, and clicking your way through a world someone made.

More than anything, I want 1BitCards to share that feeling again: the magic of turning a blank screen into a tiny interactive place that other people can explore.

  • 1BitCards is a prototype of what could be possible publishing an interactive story and game maker to Reddit, and it is still a WIP. This is only made public for the judges until I can work out the bugs and release a fully working version.
