Inspiration We were inspired by the frustration we—and many Aggies—have faced when trying to find housing, reliable roommates, or honest reviews of apartments near Texas A&M. Existing tools felt outdated, lacked personalization, or weren’t made with students in mind. We wanted to build something better: a centralized, student-first housing solution that actually understands what it’s like to live and move around College Station.
What it does 12th Home is an all-in-one housing and roommate finder designed specifically for Texas A&M students. It allows users to: Browse apartments, subleases, and dorm listings Match with compatible roommates based on preferences View commute times with integrated TAMU bus routes
How we built it We used Figma to create a fully interactive, high-fidelity prototype. We wireframed screens for onboarding, user profiles, housing filters, map integrations, forums, and messaging features. We focused on intuitive UX, clean design, and realistic data flows to simulate how the app would function once developed.
Challenges we ran into Balancing feature richness with a clean and simple user interface Creating roommate matching that felt helpful without being invasive Ensuring the design remained TAMU-specific but still scalable to other campuses
Accomplishments that we're proud of A complete, clickable prototype that feels like a real product Unique features like bus route overlays and commute Seamlessly integrating listings, reviews, roommate tools, and chat
What we learned How to prioritize user needs when building a multi-functional product That great design can bring ideas to life even without code Figma’s power for prototyping dynamic, interactive user flows The value of focusing on a specific target audience (in this case, Aggies)
What's next for 12th Home We plan to: Build a working MVP using tools like React Native and Firebase Integrate real-time transit data via APIs (e.g., TransLoc) Launch a beta test through TAMU student orgs and off-campus groups Expand to other universities while keeping a campus-specific focus
