Inspiration

I started this project a while ago as a way to play videogames with my brothers and sister. My sister isn't very good at videogames, so a lot of the times, my brothers and I have to carry her through games. I built this game as a way for everyone to contribute, just by being on the team.

Some games that inspire me: Hades, Legend of Zelda Windwaker, Risk of Rain 2, Lethal Company

What it does

One hour. Infinite trials. Gather your friends, choose your powers, and prepare for a final battle to decide the fate of the world. 11th Hour Hero is a multiplayer roguelike FPS where every choice in a shifting, procedural ship determines whether you rise in glory, or fall into defeat.

How we built it

I built this game in the Unity Game Engine targeting the OpenXR platform so that I may distribute this game on Steam alongside the Quest ecosystem.

Challenges we ran into

Testing Multiplayer games is really tough, there can be a lot of network issues involved, making sure that the correct data gets synced on all clients is tough to manage from an architectural point of view.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Getting this game to a start where VR players can play alongside PC players in the same session is a huge accomplishment I'm proud of personally.

What we learned

That building for PC players alongside Quest VR is very difficult. I've managed to keep a good procedure to make sure new features doesn't break builds, but it's hard to manage.

What's next for 11th Hour Hero

11th Hour Hero has some serious bones in place now, the procedurally generated level creates some interesting layouts, there's a good amount of obstacles, there's a good varied amount of enemies, weapons, and abilities, and the VR version is basically on feature parity with the PC game as well. What's next is an expansion of the game, such as new bosses, different level layout types, and some intriguing special enemies. I also want to expand on the lore of the game to add an emotional hook, the game loop is in place, now the rest of the game needs to be built out!
