Inspiration
Our inspiration came from countless travel experiences where we rushed through tourist attractions like checkboxes, taking photos without understanding their deeper meaning. We saw the disconnect between rich cultural stories and superficial tourist experiences, sparking our vision for AI-powered intelligent travel guidance.
What it does
- AI Tour Guide: Provides personalized introductions to attractions, explains cultural significance, and offers tailored recommendations based on user interests.
- Digital Memory Keeper: Generates beautiful postcards from visited attractions and creates a curated travel journal for personal memories and social sharing.
How we built it
- Frontend: Figma and Modao for product design and management
- AI Integration: Perplexity API for intelligent Q&A capabilities
- Development Process: User interviews → prototyping → MVP development → testing
Challenges we ran into
- Platform Pivot: Initially focused on museums but pivoted to outdoor tourism due to limited museum data access and better alignment with Perplexity's capabilities.
- Feature Scope: Planned many features (AI trip planning, AR overlays, image recognition) but focused on core pain points after interviewing 20+ users: lack of meaningful context and difficulty creating lasting memories.
- Technical Hurdles: API integration, cross-platform compatibility, and creating intuitive interfaces for users with varying technical comfort levels.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Zero-to-One Success: Three team members with no product development experience built a working prototype in 2+ weeks, demonstrating remarkable team synergy and rapid learning.
- User-Centric Approach: Conducted extensive user research, made data-driven pivots, and maintained MVP focus to deliver a polished core experience.
What we learned
- Product Focus is Critical: Successful products must embrace constraints. Feature selection and positioning matter as much as technical implementation.
- User Validation is Essential: Our initial assumptions didn't survive contact with real users. Early pivots based on user feedback saved us from building unwanted features.
- Team Collaboration: Diverse perspectives, transparent communication, and shared ownership significantly improved our decision-making and execution quality.
What's next for Travel AI Guide
- Personalized Intelligence: Demographic adaptation, learning preferences, and contextual awareness based on user history and real-time conditions.
- Voice Integration: Hands-free operation, multilingual support, offline capabilities, and immersive audio storytelling.
- Revenue Model: Freemium structure with premium subscriptions, destination packages, tourism board partnerships, and enterprise solutions for travel agencies.
