Inspiration
We were inspired by the growing need for tools that help students improve communication, argumentation, and critical thinking — especially in a world dominated by AI-generated content and short-form dialogue. We wanted to create a platform that lets users learn how to debate, think critically, and communicate effectively by actually doing it with AI.
What it does
DeBattle is an AI-powered debate platform where students and young professionals can challenge an AI opponent, practice real-time arguments, and develop critical skills. Key features include: AI Debate Mode, Switch-Side Challenge, Topic Bank & Custom Topics, Peer Practice (Add Friends), Voice-to-Text input, Debate History and Feedback.
How we built it
We developed DeBattle using: React.js for the frontend UI, Tailwind CSS for styling and mobile responsiveness, Typescript interfaces (partially implemented for scalability), OpenAI API for AI-based argumentation, Firebase (planned) for authentication, user data, and real-time debate storage, We were inspired by a variety of modern edtech UI templates but programmed everything ourselves.
Challenges we ran into
Getting the AI response flow to feel dynamic and debater-like, Designing a clean, responsive UI that feels fun yet professional, Managing multiple components and navigation states in React while prototyping quickly, Fine-tuning UX decisions (e.g., topic navigation vs. freeform input).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a functioning prototype with fully designed screens in just a few days, Achieved a smooth, interactive experience for starting and practicing debates, Worked collaboratively with great synergy under a tight deadline, Designed every feature with student benefit and skill development in mind.
What we learned
How to integrate AI into a conversational flow, How important UX decisions are for new users, The value of breaking down tasks and pairing strengths in a fast-paced team, How to balance creativity with clean, consistent branding.
What's next for 11:59 (DeBattle)
Fully integrate a trained AI Chatbot for real-time, context-aware debates, Add user authentication, profile pages, and progress tracking via Firebase, Launch a beta version for students and debate clubs, Expand topic library, allow custom prompts, and offer voice-only debates, Introduce leaderboards, badges, and challenges to make learning gamified, Work toward a full public web + mobile launch by the end of 2025
