Inspiration

This short film feels like a memory from childhood - a dream you almost remember, but not quite. It was born from a desire to explore imagination as a quiet, magical place: filled with wonder, transformation, and echoes of the stories we carry with us.

The theme of dreams has always fascinated me. I often wonder what infants dream about, or what dreams might look like to animals. This project became a way to explore the nature of imagination - not just as fantasy, but as a symbolic space rich with mystery, choices, and the question of who we are and who we might become, about paths taken and paths left unexplored.

The milestone of the 100th episode on my YouTube channel felt like the perfect moment to look inward and step into that dreamspace. One long-running thread on the channel has followed a kitten through a series of dream-episodes - in each, he takes on a new archetypal role: a pirate, a knight, a superhero, and more. These stories quietly explored pop culture mythology through the lens of childhood imagination.

At the end of each dream, the kitten collects a feather - a trace left behind, like a souvenir from sleep. From the beginning, it was planned that once seven feathers had been gathered, they would unlock something greater. The number seven - often symbolic of completeness or initiation - becomes the key to entering the dreamworld itself.

That portal opens at the end of episode 99, when the kitten assembles a dreamcatcher from the seven feathers. The 100th episode continues from there, but also stands alone: it’s not just a continuation of the story, but a reflection on memory, transformation, and the quiet surrealism of dreams.

What it does

"100 Steps into the Dreams" follows a quiet, dreamlike journey through the subconscious. After opening a portal using a handmade dreamcatcher, the kitten enters the realm of dreams - a vast, surreal landscape where different versions of himself appear along the way: a detective, a vampire count, and more. Each encounter is both whimsical and symbolic, as he moves deeper into the dreamworld.

At first, he travels on foot, but soon he meets a loyal sheep - a nod to the idea of "counting sheep" - who becomes his companion and guide. Riding through strange and beautiful dreamscapes, the kitten is helped by other dream-selves, all gently guiding him toward the palace of the Sandman.

There, in the quiet heart of the dreamworld, the Sandman offers him a golden feather made of shimmering dream-sand - a symbol of infinite possibility. The feather doesn’t grant a single wish, but instead represents the power to imagine, transform, and become anything - the very essence of dreaming.

There’s no dialogue, only music and visual storytelling. The pacing is slow and meditative, with transitions that feel like drifting from one dream to the next. The experience is immersive and emotional - less about narrative twists and more about mood, symbolism, and the soft magic of inner exploration.

How we built it

This film was created entirely by one person - from the initial idea to the final edit. I used ChatGPT to help refine the story structure and to generate all of the visual scenes through iterative prompting. Every image was then carefully adjusted in Photoshop to fix inconsistencies and ensure the visual style stayed cohesive.

To animate the still images and give them movement, I used Kling AI. It also handled transitions and motion logic - bringing the surreal world of dreams to life. Final editing, sound, and sequencing were done in CapCut.

This short film relied entirely on imagination. The dream world - including the Sandman’s palace, the sheep companion, and all the alternate dream-selves - came directly from my own mind, shaped only loosely by archetypes from pop culture and fairy tales. Every scene was invented from scratch and fine-tuned to evoke a specific mood: wonder, mystery, and the gentle weightlessness of a dream.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge in creating this film was achieving the right dreamlike pacing and flow. Unlike many of my other projects, which are built from quick, moment-to-moment visuals, this short film relies on long, unbroken scenes - some lasting up to 30 seconds - to evoke a sense of drifting through a dream.

However, Kling AI, that I used, only allows animations of up to 10 seconds at a time. To create longer scenes with smooth continuity, I generated videos based on the first and last frames of each segment - stitching together multiple overlapping animations where the last frame of one matched the first of the next.

This method offered more control, but it also introduced a significant limitation: Kling AI tends to slow down movement at the start and end of each generation. As a result, many scenes had unnatural pauses or awkward slowdowns - where a character might suddenly lose momentum or freeze entirely before continuing. I tried to minimize these moments in editing, but the effect is still noticeable in some parts of the final film.

While this unintended rhythm occasionally mirrors the surreal logic of dreams, it also made the animation process far more complex and difficult to fine-tune.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This video stands out as one of the most visually cohesive and emotionally resonant pieces I’ve created. I’m proud of how the tone, pacing, and symbolism come together to create something that feels both deeply personal and broadly relatable. The transitions between dream segments, the gentle rhythm of the journey, and the absence of dialogue all contribute to a mood that viewers have described as “magical,” “peaceful,” and “profound.”

Creating a dreamworld from scratch - with its own inner logic, visual language, and emotional arc - was a rewarding challenge. The response from the audience has been incredibly heartwarming, with many viewers describing the film as “a dream they didn’t know they needed.”

What we learned

On the technical side, I gained more experience in stitching multiple animated sequences together, especially for longer scenes. Managing smooth transitions, handling timing inconsistencies, and preserving a dreamlike flow taught me a lot about the tools and their limitations - and how to work around them.

What's next for 100 Steps into the Dreams

In upcoming episodes, I plan to dive deeper into other symbolic landscapes - exploring emotions, memory, and identity through wordless storytelling. Each video may stand alone, but together they’ll form a larger mosaic - a quiet, imaginative universe shaped by dreams, curiosity, and wonder.
