Cight: Bringing Vision to the Visually Impaired Through AI

Inspiration

The idea for Cight was born from a simple yet profound desire—to make the world more accessible to those who experience it differently. We recognized that sight is something many take for granted, yet for the visually impaired, navigating the world can be a challenge. Our inspiration came from a deep-rooted belief that technology should serve as an equalizer, breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for everyone. Fueled by our passion for innovation and our God-given talents, we set out to build something that could truly change lives.

How We Built It

Cight is powered by a seamless integration of artificial intelligence and mobile technology.

Our development process began with the creation of a robust backend using Java Spring, which serves as the brain of the operation. This backend communicates with OpenAI, allowing us to process real-world data and generate meaningful descriptions of a user’s surroundings.

On the front end, we built a Flutter-based mobile application designed for accessibility and ease of use. The app captures images of the environment and sends them to our backend, where AI processes the data and returns a detailed textual description. This text is then converted into speech, allowing users to "see" the world through sound.

Challenges We Ran Into

Innovation thrives on challenges, and while we didn’t encounter major roadblocks, we constantly pushed the limits of our own creativity and technical expertise. The hardest part wasn’t building the technology—it was coming up with an idea that would have a meaningful impact. Once we had the concept in place, the real challenge was balancing this project with our other responsibilities while participating in the hackathon. Despite the time constraints, we remained committed to delivering a functional and valuable product.

Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of

One of our greatest achievements is completing Cight in such a short timeframe. We took an ambitious idea and transformed it into a fully working application that can genuinely improve lives. Seeing our vision come to life and knowing it has the potential to help the visually impaired navigate the world with more confidence is something we take immense pride in.

What We Learned

Throughout this journey, we learned that technology has no limits when combined with creativity and purpose. We honed our technical skills, strengthened our ability to work under pressure, and gained valuable insights into AI-driven accessibility solutions. Most importantly, we were reminded of why we started this journey—to create technology that empowers people and makes a difference.

What’s Next for Cight

Cight is just getting started. Our goal is to expand its capabilities, integrating even more advanced AI features to enhance real-time object recognition and scene understanding. We also aim to refine the user experience, making the app more intuitive and efficient. Beyond that, we envision partnerships with accessibility organizations to bring Cight to as many people as possible.
