Inspiration

Most messaging apps are designed to preserve conversations. Messages remain visible, searchable, and stored long after the moment has passed.

0to0 explores the opposite idea: what if a digital message existed only in the moment of interaction?

The project was inspired by the desire to create a more private, intimate, and intentional form of communication. Instead of presenting the entire message on screen, 0to0 reveals content only beneath the user’s fingertip, through a moving light-like viewing area. Everything outside that area remains hidden.

What it does

0to0 is an experimental privacy-first messaging experience.

A hidden message can only be revealed by touching and moving across the screen. The user sees only the small portion directly beneath their fingertip, rather than the complete message at once.

The experience is designed around three principles:

  • Touch to reveal: The message becomes visible only through physical interaction.
  • Limited visibility: Only a small area of the content can be seen at any moment.
  • No visible conversation history: The interface avoids the permanent chat-log structure used by conventional messaging apps.

The result is a form of communication that feels temporary, focused, and personal.

How we built it

We designed 0to0 around a custom touch-based reveal interaction. The interface tracks the user’s finger position and creates a soft illuminated area that reveals the hidden content underneath it.

The project combines interaction design, privacy-focused product thinking, and AI-assisted development. OpenAI Codex was used during the development process to help prototype functionality, structure the code, identify problems, and improve the interaction.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was making the reveal effect feel natural rather than simply functioning like a standard mask.

The visible area needed to follow the user’s touch smoothly while keeping the rest of the message completely hidden. We also had to balance readability with privacy: a reveal area that was too large exposed too much information, while one that was too small made the message difficult to read.

Another challenge was translating an unusual communication concept into an interface that users could understand immediately.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a distinctive interaction model that does not resemble a traditional messaging interface.

Rather than treating privacy only as encryption or storage control, 0to0 also considers how information is visually exposed on the screen. The project turns reading itself into a temporary and intentional action.

What we learned

We learned that privacy can be designed not only at the technical level, but also at the level of human interaction.

Small interface decisions—such as how much content is visible, when it appears, and how the user accesses it—can completely change the emotional experience of communication.

We also learned how AI-assisted development can help transform an experimental design idea into a functional prototype more quickly.

0to0 is an experiment in communication without a permanent visual memory: a message that exists between two people, in the moment they choose to reveal it.
