Having a disease that is still very unexplored brings a great degree of uncertainty. Usually, when you can exchange ideas and find like-minded people, the uncertainty gets relieved a little bit, because you know that you are not alone. In such a difficult time our vision is to be able to convey exactly this feeling through a community. Together we are strong.

What it does

We built a website, where users can interact and exchange information and knowledge on a current/past medical situation through posts. The users:

  1. create a profile with their picture, their location etc.
  2. Can follow other users and certain topics and threads they are interested in
  3. Answer the posted questions and post their own questions
  4. Vote posts up
  5. Find other users with similar questions or who are in a similar situation to chat privately with can report inappropriate posts Medical professionals have a badge next to their name to make them stand out from the other users. The credibility of those professionals will be verified through the admins. Further, there are blogs created by the admins to post verified relevant news announcements/guidelines concerning various medical situations e.g. Tipps and Tricks for parents during corona.

How I built it

We used the nodebb template and modified it using the following tools:

  • HTML
  • CSS
  • JS, jQuery, nodeJS
  • AWS Lightsail
  • DNS (godaddy)
  • Bootstrap Further, we used AdobeSpark to make our logo.

Challenges I ran into

  • Changing the given template of nodebb
  • Working on a laptop for 8+
  • DNS of goDaddy crashed multiple times and changes took a long time to be accepted

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • We have a working social network and blog content :D
  • We iterated once by integrating the feedback of the users, who tested our website

What I learned

  • We learned how powerful a network of people with the same mission can be. -> We received so much help ranging from free AWS credit, over legal support, to 14 users that tested our platform intensively without compensation.
  • Working remotely and staying connected for entire days is possible -> 8+ hours skype sessions were new for all of us
  • HTML
  • CSS
  • JS, jQuery, nodeJS
  • AWS Lightsail
  • DNS (godaddy)

What's next for 0027_Patientenaustausch_Healthstory

We have two major upcoming challenges:

  1. we want to grow our community in order to give patients the best possible user experience, and
  2. we want to create a solid understanding of the legal situation for a platform like ours. This also includes reworking our privacy agreements and disclaimers.
