Despite being at home more often, it is sometimes hard to remember to take care of yourself, along with the added stress of current events that are affecting our daily lives. Nowadays It’s hard to keep a work-life balance all at home. With the new year, a lot of us have set goals to better ourselves, however with the reinforced isolation, it’s difficult to keep yourself accountable. Anyone who sets goals for themselves will need something that will give us all the motivation we to grow as healthy individuals. And for this, we created a mobile app “You Grow Girl” which will provide at home tasks to encourage self care, goal tracking/reaching, and a community of supportive individuals who will help cheer you on whenever needed.
What it does
The features of this app include -A daily checklist of self care tasks that can be accomplished at home, these tasks enforce basic care tasks such as showering or brushing your teeth, since we wanted to reach a wide audience of those that struggle to take care of themselves -Other tasks also promote healthy habits and setting aside time to reach your specific goal -The app also has a journal with a mood tracker to allow the user to keep track of their progress in detail -A social feature that will allow the user to share their progress and receive support from others -Inspirational photos and musical motivation which can be saved in your gallery likes shown later The app’s main mascot is a plant named Oleafia, who is an inspirational friend there to motivate you to complete your tasks by doing them with you. She grows with you the more tasks you do, and provides incentive to the user with the encouragement to take care of someone else at the same time.
How I built it
The prototype of the app was created using Figma. The drawings were created on Procreate and icons were found on The Noun Project.
Challenges I ran into
It was our first time designing on a mobile application, so we had some challenges with trying to format the pages. We had to think about how a user would use their mobile device and how to make the navigations easy for them to use. We also had the challenge of finding colors and creating a logo that would bring positivity and sincerity when the user opens the application.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are proud of what we were able to create with the given time. The goal of this application was to find a way to remember to take care of yourself and get support from others. We are also proud of the design of this project, since this was our first time designing for a mobile device. We believe that our project can help a lot of people out, especially with learning self-care and helping your mentality.
What I learned
While creating this project, we learned more design techniques we can use on Figma to help us create our app. We were able to learn how to do animation to help let the pages move more smoothly when a button was pressed. We also learned how to design an application. Due to the screen size, it was different from designing a website and we had to learn how to adjust our features to give easier access to the users.
What's next for You Grow Girl!
We would like to include more animations and new icons of Oleafia. We would like to hopefully create a functioning app of our project.
