Inspiration
We all educate ourselves in our own time. Some of us do this by reading online articles, while others love watching educational videos. For many of us, this can be a means of acquiring a significant amount of knowledge on certain subjects. However, there has not been a good way of prematurely indicating our expertise or particular interest in these subjects without actually engaging in conversations about them.
What it does
Wisdom provides a solution to this by creating a point system that accompanies one through their journey of acquiring knowledge, verifying one's comprehension via generated quizzes, and awarding points for the knowledge gained over particular subjects. Wisdom serves to use gamification to incentivize users' education beyond the classroom.
Wisdom also proves to be critical in multiple use cases: employers scanning applicants, conversation starters, class reading assignments, etc.
How we built it
Wisdom exists as a Chrome extension and a standalone website (React, TypeScript) . We used CockcroachDB, Postgres for our database. For backend, we use Python, Flask.
Challenges we ran into
Time management. We spent much time brainstorming ideas and not enough on the planning of execution. We were a little too ambitious on the scope of the project. Another challenge we faced was that our team members are from different time zones.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
In a short amount of time, we came up with and executed a project that all of us believe to be a game-changer in the education space. We were able to work with one another effectively regardless of the challenges and set the project up well for future implementations.
What we learned
We need to have better time management on individual tasks, be practical with what we can achieve over a certain period of time so that we can plan accordingly. We also learnt to use Google Cloud and specifically Natural Language AI efficiently to make the most out of the power of Google Cloud.
What's next for Wisdom
For future extensions, Wisdom's point system could be integrated into resumes, LinkedIn profiles, social media biographies, etc. We will also need to incorporate consideration of the quality of educational materials, beyond only the quantity as of the current implementation. In the long run, we want to create a Wisdom community where users share interesting educational materials, network with like-minded peers, and motivate each other to acquire knowledge through healthy competition.
