Inspiration:
Listening to experiences from UCD students with disabilities.
What it does:
Allows students with disabilities to find community through an online forum and implement change by submitting actions where, once a post reaches 100 votes or 70% of the votes from the community it affects, it will then be sent to the university's disability center to be implemented.
How we built it:
We started with ethnographic research, made low fidelity wireframes to establish layout, and brought these designs into Figma to then build our high-fidelity final prototype. Once this was done, we were able to start with the code. For the coding part, we started off our website with the HTML and CSS then made our website interactive through javascript.
Challenges we ran into:
Building a design without the ability to gather information through surveys and interviews. Understanding how to design for accessibility such as using proper contrast, spacing, and hierarchy. It was challenging to perfectly mimic the design as creating a website from scratch is a tough task to accomplish in 24hr.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
We are proud to design an application that amplifies the experiences of marginalized communities. We were able to do this by implementing resourceful methods of research and stepping into the shoes of our target audience. We are also proud to have create a visual design that emphasizes the warm and diverse community within UC Davis.
What we learned:
We were able to step into our target audiences shoes and look at how accessibility can affect their college experience and make daily lives more difficult. We extensively used HTML, CSS and some JavaScript. We learnt how every element of HTML and CSS are interconnected and gained a deeper appreciation of website creation. Made use of Replit to host our website.
What's next for Wherever We Go:
We would be interested in delving back into the problem space and conducting interviews with students with disabilities to truly understand their experiences. From there we would also conduct ib testing, to make sure our app is useable and also accessible. We hope to further develop the Map feature, where students can post how they navigate inaccessible design on campus.
