Inspiration

We got inspired by a Facebook letter made by a closest friend of Andrea, a girl brutally murdered by her husband. In the letter, she told her: "Sorry, sorry for not doing anything about it the first time I heard Marvin assaulted you. Sorry for not calling you to see what was really happening and if you needed help, and even if it was necessary and you got angry with me, try to get you away from that man... Sorry for not thinking that something worse could happen, that you could die by Marvin's hands, as it happened..."

According to UN Women, Worldwide around 120 million girls (slightly more than 1 in 10) have experienced forced intercourse or other forced sexual acts at some point in their lives. Latin America is the region where there are more murders of women because of their gender: 14 of the 25 countries in the world with the highest rates of feminicide are in this part of the world. Around 60,000 women are killed each year in Latin America, mainly at the hands of a "sentimental partner".

What it does

We empower people around victims of violence to help them, by denouncing and reporting this cases. Using a Facebook messenger bot we accomplish this; we let the users give an anonymous denounce of violence, and this information is provided to the closest local leader that is in charge to contact the victim and give them support, as well all the data is provided to the police department and authorities through a dashboard where they can find in the map, the exact location & details of all the incidents.

How we built it (process)

We combined the power and scope of Facebook messenger, and integrate with Natural Language Processing tools, web speech recognition and cloud functions in Firebase, so we can provide an easy and powerful tool where people can report, denounce and get support from any type of violence.

Challenges we ran into

Empowering people to denounce or report third persons violent incidents... The most frequently asked question concerning a battering situations is, why does the victim stay? While there exists a variety of reasons, it is also very possible that the victim may be locked into a cycle of violence.

A more technical challenge was to integrate the FB messenger reports with the map.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Create a chatbot that can do save life's! Live bot working.

What we learned

People suffering violent incidents, don’t have a timely mechanism for making anonymous denounces or reports, so thousands of women are killed every year around the globe... Some of the most vulnerable members of the group with no place to turn are killed without a voice, and a simple application can help save people lives.

What's next for WeToo

Giving a voice to the +120 million girls around the globe, that have experienced forced intercourse or other forced sexual acts at some point in their lives.
