Inspiration
Healthcare workers (HCWs) are extremely busy people, especially during this pandemic. From working long shifts to the high stakes in treatments, HCWs go through a lot of physical, mental, and emotional stress. Today, burnout is a huge problem in healthcare settings, and we decided to address this challenge with WeCare!
What it does
This is a self-care and social media app that helps doctors and other healthcare workers who face burnout. Many HCWs don't spend nearly enough time on self-care. WeCare helps them complete and keep track of various self-care activities during and after work hours. It also lets users vent out their emotions on personal vent pages, read words of encouragement, chat with other users of the same specialty (surgeons and surgeons, psychiatrists and psychiatrists), and share their struggles with others.
How we built it
We used Android Studio and Java to create the mobile app and back4app backend platform to quickly and easily set up a Parse Server, where the data is stored.
Challenges we ran into
This was the first hackathon for most of the team, and half the team did not have much experience with app development, let alone Android Studio and Java (also Git). We also did not have enough time to figure out how to implement all our planned features.
Accomplishments
We were able to implement log-in/sign-up, profile, self-care tracker, words of encouragement, personal vent space, and chat features. We also made public stories, relaxation activities, group chat listings. It is a working proof of concept that was achieved within a strict time limit despite the lack of computer science knowledge and experience. The current version would be able to start helping healthcare workers avoid burnout.
What we learned
We started to learn how to develop an app and make use of Andriod Studio and git. We also learned how to create charts and tables in Android.
What's next for WeCare
We will add more social interaction, teams and group chats, self-care challenge features, tools to help with work and life balance, a calendar that allows you to track self-care, anti-burnout articles, and more!
