Inspiration
The United States falls behind almost every country in our ability to stop the spread of COVID. We wanted to find a way to make people take COVID precautions seriously and challenge them to think about how their actions might affect the community. We decided to target a specific age group in order to make the concept and messaging successful, trying to effectively reach a portion of the population rather than ineffectively reaching everybody. As a result, we decided to turn our attention towards informing young people - mainly 15 to 25 year olds - about behaviors that are appropriate in the upcoming months as their elders are receiving vaccinations and they are not. This time in their lives will be incredibly important to sustain their health and keep many young people from developing long term symptoms or even dying.
Problem: -We must think beyond public-health messaging to invigorate the public to take COVID seriously -We must target specific populations separately for messaging to be effective Solution: -Create a platform to access COVID information and analyze personal safety precautions -Connect to youth population with age appropriate incentives like being tagged on social media and the opportunity to share daily events
What it does
Connects the youth population to a platform where they can analyze their safety precautions and share adherence to guidelines with age appropriate incentives like being tagged on social media and the opportunity to share daily events.
How we built it
We built the wireframe of our app using Figma. For the front-end we used React, Bootstrap, Javascript, HTML, and CSS. For the back-end we used Python, Flask Framework, and Flask-PyMongo to connect to our Mongodb.atlas database.
Challenges we ran into
-One of the challenges we ran into was coming up with ideas. We originally heard that young people are less likely to care about the repercussions of contracting COVID-19 and may therefore not be following health guidelines to the best of their abilities. After doing more research on the topic, we discovered that this idea may not be completely factual. So we ended up pivoting in a slightly new direction. -Another challenge we ran into was connecting the front-end to the back-end. The hardest hurdle to solve was connecting the post request coming from React to the Flask server. We couldn't figure it out because there was something wrong with the proxy which handles where the post request goes. We figured out that 2 of our endpoints were broken so we tested to find out which was broken to fix the issue. -We did not know the type of data that was coming into Flask -Not all views made
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the following: -Implementing an idea that we haven’t seen before -Able to connect front-end and back-end -Front-end, server, and database are all working locally
What we learned
We learned about the 4 endpoints and how to test them and the difference between the get and the post requests for react and the server
What's next for #UofCC The Universe of Covid Consciousness App
-Create more views and a better user experience. -We would like to connect to Tik Tok to better reach the younger generation. -Deployment on the cloud
