We would like to be considered for the Beginner Track since all members are beginners
This is a submission for the Connection track
Inspiration
Amid COVID-19, most of our team members have felt a compromise of quality of life, especially in terms of social life. We spoke to our close friends, all of whom are college students, and most agree that they've been feeling a sense of loneliness and a lack of connection due to COVID-19.
To verify whether the experience is universal, we have conducted a survey on over 300 college students and discovered that an overwhelming majority of the participants have experienced a detrimental change in social life and mental wellbeing. 70% of participants stated COVID-19 has negatively impacted their social life considerably, 59% believe COVID-19 significantly increased the intensity of their mental health issue, and 59% believe the pandemic makes it hard to join campus event and school clubs. We also found out that 41% and 55% of the participants believe existing social media platforms and school resources little to no effect on addressing the social problems encountered by students.
As a result, 84% of the survey participants agree they are interested in a platform that helps meet other students on campus. This is what brings us to our solution UMeet - the first ever social media platform that connects students in the scope of their designated campus and builds lifelong connections.
What it does
UMeet empowers students to overcome the common obstacles stopping them from meeting new people by providing a safe space amid Covid-19. The app showcases their commonalities, providing online interactions, and notifying campus events. To ensure a safe space, the app verifies an .edu email and set you up to meet people from your corresponding schools.
We are similar to common "dating apps" you would see in your app store. However we are different from other connection platform in that you can get connected with the people who are taking the same courses as you, have similar interests, and are in the clubs you're interested in joining.
Another special feature about our app is that people can post campus or external events on the campus and share it with your matches, so this resolve the issue that people are not feeling connected with campus events.
How we built it
We built the prototype on Figma, a platform that allows prototyping. First we drew out the rough concept storyboard on iPad and we started using Figma to build the entire prototype.
Challenges we ran into
The entire hackathon was a challenge as we are beginners and we had no idea where to begin. From tool selection to how to use the tool, we watched numerous YouTube videos to help us get acquainted with the tools. The execution of the prototype was intense as well. It was a time crunch. Under pressure, staying organized and well-communicated among team mate was a challenge too especially when the hackathon was virtual. We were able to stay on top of this by staying on the Discord voice channel and using it as a virtual "study room".
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are all first timers here so we are proud that we are able to make a completed submission with a working prototype. We love the logo, design, and how the product turned out in the end. The fact you can click the buttons and scroll through the pages is really cool as well!
What we learned
This experience has taught us the essentials of the Figma platform and the utilization of the UI design integrated to our final product. We additionally learned to cooperate to produce a complete, sophisticated project whilst a highly limited time constraint.
What's next for UMeet
With a whole door of opportunities waiting to open, UMeet will build new friendships beyond any other app imaginable. We hope to implement this app as soon as possible to start bringing students together in the post-COVID 19 world and ultimately put an end to the significant issue regarding their social lives.
