Inspiration
The inspiration was the raw, heated moment. I stood at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, an AI creator and journalist for the AI Creator Union (AICU), literally surrounded by hundreds of anti-AI protestors.
Armed only with my smartphone, I wasn't just observing; I was documenting a historical clash of ideas. The inspiration was to cut through the noise and capture the real, human dialogue on the ground, using my own original photographs from the event as the only visual source.
What it does
"The Sun of Annecy" is a hybrid AI documentary music video. Its function is to elevate and synthesize (Aufheben) the superficial, binary debate surrounding AI.
Instead of just "Pro-AI" vs "Anti-AI," this film uses the real confrontations and dialogues to explore the true enemy: the corporate ego and commercial logic that devalues human creativity. It's a journalistic tool designed to debunk the dangerous, emerging myth that "AI means cheap," and instead, call for mutual respect and creative solidarity.
How we built it
This project is a hybrid, but the workflow was journalism-first, built entirely from original, still photographs I took on-site.
- Photography & Script: I captured hundreds of photos on my smartphone. These stills became the raw visual material.
- Soundtrack & Rap: Suno V5 was used to generate the core musical track. However, a key challenge became a creative opportunity: due to the extreme heat causing thermal runaway, it was impossible to record my documentary narration on-site. I turned this failure into a feature: I re-wrote the narration as a Rap part, which I performed and recorded in-studio. This transformed the film into a catchy, memorable music video that also serves as a hard-hitting documentary.
- Visual Generation (Photo-to-Video): NijiJourney, ComfyUI (with models like Wan 2.2/2.5), Google's Veo 3, and Kling 2.1 were used to animate and bring my original still photographs to life, turning static moments into a living, breathing emotional landscape.
- Post-Production: All elements were assembled in Adobe Premiere and Photoshop to create a cohesive cinematic experience.
- Translation: ChatGPT was vital in ensuring the rapid, nuanced translation of the Japanese and English lyrics for our multi-lingual report.
Challenges we ran into
The core challenge was a question: Can a digital, AI-driven film, built only from still photos, truly convey the physical "heat" and human "passion" of the moment?
This was mirrored by a severe technical challenge: the filming took place during an extreme heatwave exceeding 40°C (104F). My smartphone—my only camera—was constantly suffering from thermal runaway, forcing shutdowns and making continuous recording impossible. This physical struggle with the "sun" became a powerful metaphor for the "heat" of the debates, a fight to keep the dialogue going before a total meltdown.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Turning Failure into Art: We are proud of turning a critical technical failure (thermal runaway) into a core creative decision (the Rap part), enhancing the film's power as both a documentary and a music video.
- Pioneering a Format: We created a true "AI Documentary" built only from on-site photography, proving that this digital medium can carry immense journalistic "heat" and passion.
- Journalistic Integrity: We published the full, unedited statements of the anti-AI groups on "AICU Media." This commitment to truth is the backbone of the film.
- Creating Real Dialogue: The film ends with the line, "...this was a good dialogue." This isn't just a lyric; it's what actually happened on the ground.
What we learned
The most profound lesson was this: The core issues raised by the opposition—about Compensation, Control, and Consent—are our issues, too.
We learned that the true "enemy" isn't each other. The true threat is the corporate and commercial logic that devalues all creativity, pushing the false narrative that "AI is cheap." This film is our direct counter-argument, a declaration that we will never use AI to devalue our own work or the work of others.
What's next for The Sun of Annecy
This is not just a film; it is a shared challenge and a shared opportunity for everyone involved in the future of AI and creativity.
This film is the public face of our larger movement to build a sustainable future ecosystem. We invite everyone to join our call to action: https://www.change.org/AI-eco-for-creators
The claims of the anti-AI groups have valid points. They are not just opponents; they may be future users and valuable allies. Instead of turning away from confrontation, we believe we must deepen our understanding of one another.
By sharing this film, we hope to advance this vital dialogue, foster greater understanding among all people, and help build a sustainable, respectful industry for "AI film."
And this project is also a statement. If anyone believes that Japanese creators are silent on these critical issues, it is time for them to update their perception.
