This generative art project, The Rites of Corvus, is a surrealist exploration of the human psyche, memory, and existential burden, utilising the crow (Corvus) as a central, metamorphic motif.
The series is presented as a dynamic visual loop, where hyper-realistic portraits—each personifying a different state of mind or phase of life—are consumed, obscured, or transformed by flocks of black birds. The contrast between the striking orange background and the stark, detailed subjects emphasises the psychological drama.
The crows function as both visual elements and narrative symbols, representing everything from intrusive thoughts, heavy secrets, and the weight of history, to the fleeting nature of memory and identity. Notable moments include:
- The Mask of Crows: An initial state where the face is completely formed by the birds, suggesting identity is a collective, dark burden.
- The Pages of History: An elderly figure whose mind is layered with crows carrying snippets of text, symbolising the weight of accumulated knowledge and forgotten history.
- The Burden of Innocence: Younger subjects whose features are marked by the birds or the symbols they carry (stars, crosses), illustrating the onset of conscious struggle and spiritual questioning.
By blending the highly detailed, classical portrait style with a disruptive, surreal narrative element, The Rites of Corvus aims to evoke an unsettling beauty that resonates with themes of transformation, darkness, and the complexity of the internal world. The animation enhances the theme of ceaseless psychological flux.
