Inspiration
The Heatie Hoodie was inspired by the need for warmth all over the world. Whether you are affected by natural disasters, power outages, are less fortunate or simply seek a bit more comfort when out in nature. The Heatie Hoodie is here to help!
What it Does
Blanket, Jacket, and Pillow, the Heatie Hoodie can do it all. Combining 3 convertible silhouettes means it can be used to solve many daily problems. Need warmth at night? Have a heated blanket. Need warmth on the go? Have a heated jacket. Finally, you ever just need a warm place to rest your head? Well the Heatie Hoodie can do that too! With the addition of wearable technology this garment has the capability to detect the temperature surrounding the wearer and heat up their core accordingly! And built in safety features keep the heat emitters from getting too hot, or igniting by shutting down after a designated time period.
Other safety features included in the Heatie Hoodie are emergency lights and signals queued up by the press of a button!
How We Built it
The Heatie Hoodie itself is patterned and constructed in a complete zero-waste method. Meaning it is made as a complete shape with no fabric from production thrown out. In theory this product would be made out of recycled materials, with the notions and waterproof layer made from recycled plastics, and the lining material made of a patchwork of recycled garments. The point of this material exploration is to reduce our economic footprint; not only are we recycling and repurposing materials previously thought gone to waste, but we are creating a product with multiple functions this reducing the amount a consumer may purchase.
Challenges We Ran into
As a group of Fashion Design Majors we certainly expected some struggle with the technology side of this project, but with the right guidance we found it flowed quite well.
Accomplishments and What We Learned
The process of building this product brought the four of us together, and taught us team skills and perseverance; we honed our skills and even learned some new ones. Being a group of fashion design students the aspect of wearable technology was daunting, but thankfully we all knew how to help where needed, and one of us even tackled the technology head first, teaching herself to code and program our garment to do just what we needed!
What's next for The Heatie Hoodie
Your investment!!! The next stage of the Heatie Hoodie would continue its multi-functional conversation. We would pursue creating the necessary add-ons to allow the garment to zip into a sleeping bag for optimal comfort and warmth at night. Most importantly, Heatie Hoodie wants to provide warmth for those in need going forward. Meaning providing garments free of purchase to those less fortunate who need it most.
