Inspiration

This project was born from a personal fascination with the archetypes of legendary warriors and a simple question: "What would happen if history's most iconic warriors, separated by time and geography, had to unite to face a threat that none could defeat alone?"

The main inspiration was the desire to create an impossible mythological alliance: the discipline of the Samurai, the fury of the Viking, the mysticism of the Aztec, and the ancestral power of the Maori. I wanted to explore the clash and eventual harmony of their cultures, aesthetics, and philosophies of combat. Artificial Intelligence was the tool that ultimately allowed me to visualize this epic fantasy, breaking the barriers of traditional production.

What it does

""The Chosen Ones" is a short film that tells the story of four of history's most legendary warriors. Summoned by a deity they know as their respective gods—Odin, Amaterasu, Quetzalcoatl, and the Ancestors—they are torn from their timelines and cultures and brought together in a desolate underworld.

There, they must overcome their initial mistrust to unite and fight a primordial enemy: a colossal giant of obsidian and energy that threatens to destroy the balance of all their worlds. The short film depicts their journey to becoming a unified force, unleashing their elemental and spiritual powers.

The power system is designed on two levels, evidenced when each warrior draws their maximum energy: an elemental power (Earth, Fire, Water, Air) as a base ability, represented by the color of each power, and a "Maximum Power." After investigation, the term "Totem" was discarded due to its cultural specificity, and the concept of a guardian animal spirit for each warrior was adopted, which aligns better with each culture.

How we built it

This short film was created entirely by me, using a workflow that blends traditional filmmaking with cutting-edge AI generation and a series of automations also developed by me.

Script and Plot: The process began with a clear idea, evolving into a complete screenplay that established the plot, dialogue (such as Odin's speech), and character arcs.

Art Direction and Visual Styles: To create a clear contrast, we defined a unique cinematic style for each warrior in their world of origin (e.g., cold and desaturated for the Viking; high-contrast and formal for the Samurai).

Detailed Pre-Production: We translated the script into an extremely detailed shot list. Each shot was conceived as an AI prompt, specifying not only the description but also the camera angle, action, lighting, and cinematic style.

Image Generation (AI): Each prompt is used to generate the base image (keyframe) for each shot.

Animation and Editing: The generated images were animated using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence models to add dynamism to the scenes and avoid creating an unnecessary number of videos. I ended up creating custom chatbots on Google (Genms), which, when trained by sharing the images and providing the scene context, were able to deliver a prompt to create video fragments with different shots within them. This helped make the action scenes more dynamic and saved a lot of time and credits on AI websites. The videos were assembled using editing software.

Sound Design and Soundtrack: Music, sound effects (roars, metal clashes, elemental effects), and voiceovers were added to bring the film to life.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was undoubtedly character consistency.

Visual Coherence: AI is excellent at creating unique images, but maintaining a character's face, clothing, and tattoos across dozens of different shots, angles, and actions was a constant battle.

Narrative Fluency: Early versions jumped from one "epic image" to another, creating narrative gaps (like the arrival in the underworld we mentioned). We had to learn how to generate the "boring shots"—reaction shots, close-ups, establishing shots, and voice-over narration to provide plot context—that are essential for the story to be understandable and flow smoothly.

Prompt Optimization: Writing a prompt that understood "a low-angle shot in a Kurosawa-esque cinematic style" required a lot of experimentation and refinement, and as I mentioned in the previous point, my most practical solution, although it took me a while to refine it, was to create chatbots to create the optimized prompts for multi-shots, so the coherence and fluidity were better controlled.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm incredibly proud of having overcome the challenge of consistency through strategic simplification. Deciding to give the Samurai or the Aztec lighter clothing wasn't a failure; it was a conscious art direction decision that allowed the short film to be made and maintain its coherence.

I'm also proud of the two-tiered power structure (elemental and spiritual/animal) and the creation of four distinct visual styles that manage to unite under a single aesthetic in the final battle. We succeeded in telling a story with very little—a beginning, middle, and end—using only this new technology.

What we learned

The most important lesson is that generative AI doesn't replace the director; it makes them more necessary than ever.

Reaffirm that in AI-driven filmmaking, the prompt becomes your script, your cinematography, and your art direction, all rolled into one. You can't simply "fix it in post-production." Solid pre-production and a clear vision as a director are the only way to guide this powerful tool to tell the story you want to tell, and not just generate pretty, random images.

What's next for The Chosen Ones - short film

The universe is just beginning!

Episode II: The next logical step is to explore a sequel. What happens when the warriors return to their worlds? Or what other threat might require them to reunite, perhaps bringing new warriors into the mix?

Exploring New Pantheons: We would love to make a similar short with a completely new set of warriors from other cultures (e.g., a Roman legionary, a Persian warrior, a Shaolin monk, an Egyptian warrior).

Technological Improvement: As video AI improves, we plan to revisit this concept to create a version with better movement and animation.
