✨ Inspiration
We wanted to help people in awkward situations become social butterflies. More people are suffering from social anxiety post-COVID. We wanted to create an mobile app to enable individuals by suggesting prompts (one or two starters sentences) on specific topics. In order to help them better engage in conversations or even start one to begin with. We heard about those awkward first dates or even the dreaded ice-breakers. Time to change that with socially!
What it does
React Native application ran on Expo
Consist of a home page where users can search for topics
Users could be in a group situation and the conversation is dry with a click on their phone users can take charge of a conversation in real life by the helpful suggested prompt
The app could also be a tool to help others break out of their shells by encouraging them to contribute to a current conversation, it is simple search the current discussed topic in real life and get conversation starters for it
Trending topic page is a fun way for friends or even strangers to discuss about hot topics with a lot of media traction
Isn't cold brew just dirt and water?
Will Blackpink release new music in 2023?
Is university degrees worth it?
Jump into a hot trending topic with the conversation starters, it is so easy!
How we built it
React Native, Tailwind CSS, Native Wind & Django (REST API).
Challenges we ran into
Integrating the API was challenging and was the last step in really completing our project well. We had to compromise and consider the time constraints. Although we had built an active database on Django we still had to fall back on our dummy data as it was not integrating as smoothly as intentioned. Styling issues in React Native and creating the application as closely to our UI designs was also challenging. This is due to the restrictions with the push for Native Wind by React Native and its lack of styling freedom.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The most important accomplishment we want to mention is our collaboration and teamwork. This is the first time we four people formed as a team, we communicate with each other intensely over these weekend. Building an app requires the effort of multiple team members, not even mention in less than two days. We value our people first therefore we are be able to collaborate effectively and work together to create a product, that's a significant accomplishment.
What we learned
- Styling on React Native is a nightmare and integration with backend :)
- We should take credit and be proud of what we achieved in such a short time frame
- Learnt UI, coding and video making skills
What's next for Socially
We are aiming to make Socially highly customizable, allowing users to tailor the conversation prompts to their specific needs. Such as choose the tone of the prompts (funny, serious, thought-provoking, etc.), the level of difficulty, and even the length of the prompts. I guess you will have to be social to see what Socially will come up with next!
