Picture this. It's late at night, you're going to bed, and you decide to check Twitter one more time. You see that rioters stormed the capital. Or that COVID infections are up. Despite the bad news, or maybe because of it, you continue mindlessly scrolling, until suddenly hours have passed and the sun is rising. If you've experienced this before, or something similar, you've experienced doom scrolling! According to the Cleveland Clinic, doom scrolling is bad because it can reinforce pre-existing negative thoughts, as well as create new ones. Additionally, it can impact your sleep length, quality and schedule. According to Dr. Susan Albers, PsyD, “Burying your nose in a phone can exacerbate disconnection and loneliness. Being locked on a screen can zap your energy and leave you feeling drained.”
What it does
Social Simplicity aims to remove the fear of missing out and stress of overuse of social media sites. Our Discord bot keeps track of your social media accounts for you and notifies you when you receive important posts. That way you don't have to check them! We also have an AR app that lets you visualize your social media. This serves both as a virtual art gallery and a way to move around and avoid doom scrolling.
How we built it
We used Firebase as the database to store user info, Express for the server, Unity/echoAR for the AR app, and Discord.js to make the Discord bot.
Challenges we ran into
Time was one of the biggest challenges we ran into. Both of us explored and worked with new technologies during this hackathon, and learning to use them effectively in such a short time span was definitely a challenging, yet rewarding experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of seeing the project through and with the best of our abilities. We hope that this project could be an inspiration to others, or even be useful in real-world settings.
What's next for Social Simplicity
As mentioned on our website, we would love to add support for more social media, such as Twitter or Facebook. We would also like to touch up our AR app and Discord bot with additional features such as being able to like a post.
