Inspiration
At the opening ceremony of TreeHacks, the co-Founder of Human Capital Baris Akis told us how he sat in those seats struggling on his linear algebra final a few years ago. It sparked a memory of a recent conversation I’d had with my professor where we discussed why so many students struggle with linear algebra in particular.
Why? Many students fail to develop a conceptual understanding of vectors and matrices because there is no accessible way to visually demonstrate the intuition behind the math.
After initial research, it became clear that augmented reality would be a powerful solution to strip away the complexity, revealing the simplicity in visual learning. This technique is justified through biology: as opposed to text, visuals are processed 60,000x faster.
However, we became concerned with the prohibitive cost and technical difficulty of current AR educational platforms. While wealthy private schools may have the resources to include dedicated AR devices, we wanted to focus on building a platform for the rest of the world. We designed a platform where no assumptions were made about access to specific devices or technical ability, so students can learn even if they don't own a specific device and so teachers can create 3D lessons even if they don't know how to code.
What it does
SnapClass is a platform that allows teachers to share augmented reality educational elements, which are effortlessly integratabtle into lesson plans. By using Snapchat lenses as a vehicle, students won't even have to download an additional app; they simply scan a QR code which loads the filter and are then free to explore the 3D model at their own pace. Furthermore, due to the usability of the Snapchat lens platform, we envision interdisciplinary learning opportunities where students can develop tech skills by building their own augmented reality models for their class.
In all, by combining a familiar platform that students love with the proven educational power that augmented reality provides, we've created an addicting learning platform that's accessible for students all around the globe.
