Building the frame
Putting it all together
We're both web developers - so, we wanted to work on something that used technology but in a completely different way.
What it does
It's a mirror that tells you the weather, time and shows a random XKCD comic every day :-)
How we built it
There were so many steps! First we had to find the materials. This included sourcing two way mirror from a local glass company called Mirror Crafter in South West Baltimore. Then we built the frame from wood and tore apart an old monitor. We then built the set up raspberry pi and monitor into the frame.
Challenges we ran into
We really had to think outside of the box since our tools were limited. We also had to remember how to navigate without a mouse (harder than I remember).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The wood work. We know computers but it was really great to built something that turned out really solid and pretty lovely. It's actually a thing that we'll be proud to hang on the wall in our house.
What we learned
We learned a lot about working with a raspberry pi from the command line and woodworking.
What's next for Smart Mirror
We'll probably keep customizing the display but mostly just hang it on our wall.
