Inspiration

The COVID-19 pandemic has been an unsettling time for many of us. It requires us to take extra caution when entering social situations. Social distancing must be observed. There is a lot of good information out there that can tell you when it would be a good idea to social distance based on the number and severity of cases. We wanted a way to organize that information and display it in a nice, concise manner so the user has to do as little work as possible to stay informed.

In short, knowing which locations are comparatively safer for travel is important information to have, and hence the purpose of the current project.

What it does

The website lists number of confirmed cases, new cases, number of hospital beds remaining, and the risk level for any county in the United States.

How we built it

The frontend was made with the HTML structural layer, the CSS styling layer, and the JavaScript interactive layer; the backend was made with vanilla JavaScript with additional libraries, namely, Node.js, Express and Request. For hosting we chose Google Cloud Platform's AppEngine hosting service

Challenges we ran into

One problem was quickly organizing and executing a plan with five people within a period of two days. This required a lot of decisions to be made rather quickly without having time to assess the decisions. We just had to go with it and hope for the best.

Another problem was working with asynchronous JavaScript for the first time. Our team ended up getting help from a mentor and they helped us out a lot, big thanks to the mentors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our highly useable UI and quick query response.

What we learned

Coordinating teamwork in the project using git which allowed us to have smoother project development.

What's next for SF HACKS TEAM
