Summary of Our Solution

During our internship program, we had to focus on increasing inclusivity and accessibility. My team and I came across the issue of how the anosmic community was undervalued and overlooked. Anosmia is a condition that affects a person's ability to smell, and as a result, they cannot experience the nuances of fragrances. Our team thought about how this community was excluded from the experience of purchasing fragrances, and we wanted to find a solution to this problem.

We started by speaking to people in the anosmic community to understand their pain points. We learned that they felt excluded from the fragrance industry and had difficulty selecting fragrances online because they couldn't smell them. They often had to rely on the descriptions or recommendations of others, which didn't always align with their preferences. This led us to come up with the idea of creating a VR experience that would allow the anosmic community to purchase fragrances online.

The development of the VR experience was a challenging but rewarding experience for our team. We quickly realized that VR is relatively new and has a steep learning curve. We had to learn how to use VR software and hardware, design a VR environment that would allow users to explore fragrances, and create an interactive experience that would appeal to the anosmic community. We spent many hours experimenting with different designs, testing different scents, and getting feedback from the anosmic community.

Through this process, we learned how to work with a technology that we had never encountered before. We discovered the importance of user-centered design and the importance of taking into account the needs and preferences of our target audience. We also learned that inclusivity and accessibility are not just buzzwords but real challenges that require innovative solutions. In the end, our VR experience allowed the anosmic community to purchase fragrances online in a way that was inclusive and accessible. Users could explore different scents, read descriptions, and get a sense of how the fragrance would make them feel. Our team was proud to have created a solution that helped bridge the gap between the fragrance industry and the anosmic community, and we hope that our work inspires others to think creatively about accessibility and inclusivity in their own fields.
