Inspiration
I was shocked by the news of animals harmed and killed by marine debris.
I wanted to help.
Could I turn this emotion into a game? I wanted to create a game that is bright and gentle, like talking to friends. And so, game development began.
What it does
A board game where you surf on a trash-filled sea.
- You are a brave surfer!
- Ride the dirty waves to rescue tangled sea otters and seals.
- Roll two dice, choose one number, and ride the waves.
- Flip a wave card to reveal trash: everyday items like plastic bottles, foam from buoys, and fishing gear like hooks.
- If you open three cards with the same trash symbol, it's game over!
- Create combinations, clean up the trash, and ride perfectly onto the rocks where injured animals are to rescue them.
- Successfully return to the beach for a rescue success!
■ Refreshing Trash Cleanup: Create combinations by matching card numbers to remove the trash. Clear out accumulated garbage with three cards or a straight flush.
■ Thrills and Courage Test
■ Short Playtime: Ends in about 3 minutes, replayable.
■ Adorable Rescued Animals: Check the rescued animals in your research notes. The more you know about their cute habits, the more you'll love them!
How we built it
- Research on the theme "Issue of marine debris and harmed animals."
- Explore genres suitable for Flutter development and adopt a card game.
- Generate mechanics ideas, test with actual playing using cards, dice, and tokens.
- Learn Flutter.
- Simultaneously create designs.
- Development.
Challenges we ran into
I initially developed a To-Do app and later created the current project by renaming it. However, I encountered difficulty when attempting to build it on a physical device. To overcome this issue, I created a new project and successfully built it by copying over the source code and resources.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Developed Original Game Mechanics: Created a new game, not a copy. Developing mechanics that can be played repeatedly in solo mode was challenging but achieved.
Bright and Gentle Experience: Translated a serious issue into a positive and warm experience.
What we learned
First-time Learning and Development
To develop a game in a short period of 8 weeks using Flutter and Dart, we undertook extensive learning and trials.
- Programmers mastered Flutter and Dart.
- Designers learned and mastered Rive.
- Researched Flutter and developed a game plan that leverages its excellent features.
- Learned the potential of conveying the seriousness of marine debris through the game, resonating with the vision of the Global Gamers Challenge.
What's next for Rescue Sea Friends
Our challenge is to release this game and have it played by many people. To achieve that goal, we face several challenges and will address them.
- Implement a ranking feature using servers.
- Display animations created with Rive: Samples below.
- Add sound.
- Bug fix.
- Debug for playability and improve the quality of the experience.
Built With
- dart
