Inspiration
Seattle has a large homeless population, with about 4,500 people a night without a stable roof over their heads. Commuters, students, and people of the community want to help but are uncertain of the best way to do so. Currently, there is no direct communication between people who want to donate and organizations (ex: food banks, homeless shelters). This is what PhilanTrophy seeks to solve.
What it does
PhilanTrophy allows organizations to post items they need (canned goods, blankets, clothing, etc.) and users can donate directly to the place. To incentivize people to contribute, we use a point system that people can rack up and redeem coupons or other special offerings.
How I built it
Adobe XD, Photoshop
Challenges I ran into
Initially, we were building the website that supports the organizational side while also designing the mobile application that focuses on the donator's side of the product. About half way through we decided to focus on one aspect in order to complete the project with maximum quality.
What I learned
12 hours is short. We pivoted many times.
What's next for PhilanTrophy
Develop the mobile application and a website for charitable organizations to request donations. Broaden the scope of target users (organizations) to include other communities in need, such as non-profits that help refugees.
