Inspiration
COVID-19 has made it significantly harder to create connections with our peers, especially in an educational or professional setting. With this in mind, we created Pear as a way for those individuals to connect in a pressure-free virtual space, optimal for all users from students to startups. Popular and easy-to-use dating apps such as Tinder and Bumble inspired us to create a virtual platform for the tech community to come together and find people to work on projects together, whether it be for hackathons or for fun!
What it does
Have you ever had an idea for a project, but found it challenging to find other interested team members? Using Pear, when a user simply signs up and inputs relevant information about themselves, the website will match the user to other similar users. People are able to view other people’s profiles, and look at ongoing and new projects created by the community.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and Javascript to build our web application. Pear has a user sign-in page and register page to allow users to sign in or if they're new, sign-up. The matches page displays all of the other users that match the user's specified tags.
Challenges we ran into
Collaboration in GitHub was new to us, so it gave us some issues, especially during times where we needed to merge code. We also struggled with creating a user-database that would store the all users. For the website layout, there were also challenges and a lot of trial and error.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Pear turned out very visually appealing, which we think will be beneficial to gaining users. Everyone loves a good looking and easy to use interface!
What we learned
A lot of effort is put into making things look good, and even small things can cause major issues. Design is incredibly important to both the users and the creators, and can be quite complicated. We became more familiar with using HTML and CSS to format our site.
What's next for Pear
In the future, we plan to, first of all, improve the functionality. We also want to add a projects tab for users to view upcoming projects and a customizable profile page. We would love to also implement a friends tab where you could message your matches, and a rewards system to incentivize users to message others and be active.
