We believed that quarantine should not be able to stop people from connecting with others or finding love. So what better than a social networking web app that allows you to make friends and find dates all from the comfort of your couch.

What it does

Upon registering at Netflix-n-Chill, the user is asked to install our Google plug-in that tracks and stores the Netflix movies you watch as well as the duration you watched each movie for. It will then employs a sophisticated algorithm to sort through the data of all the users to find the individuals who best match your movie interests and allows you to connect and bond with others who enjoy the same film passions as you!

How we built it

The web app was built using HTML, CSS, and Javascript in combination with Firebase. The Google Chrome extension was built using Javascript and the information collected was stored in Firestore. The algorithm that determines the matches based on the data in Firestore was built using Python.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was setting up the Firebase Authentication in order to allow users to sign up and register accounts that hold their personal data.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Having never used Firebase or having built Google extensions in the past, to be able to successfully build a web app that uses both is something that we are glad to take away from this hackathon.

What we learned

We learned how to guild Google Chrome extensions for the first time as well as successfully employ Firebase to hold our users data.

What's next for Netflix-n-Chill

We can develop Netflix-n-Chill so that it is not only an app that finds people who match your movie interest but also provide services (such as date night) so that you and your date could better enjoy your time together!
