I met the composer Amine Boucekkine at a screening of one of my short films. I felt compelled to work with one of his musical pieces. In contrast to the nine months I spent on my previous film, in a short and spontaneous creative gesture, I wanted to try to express what melancholy means to me. It's an emotion I often experience and find rich in nuances. That was undoubtedly the film's greatest ambition: to use a very simple idea and a script that can be summed up in two sentences, without the aid of any words—since we are devoid of them in the midst of a melancholic episode—to show and let us hear all the shades of black melancholy. To convey this melancholy solely through the humanity of glances... yet created with the help of machines :-)
