Inspiration

The idea for our application for medical professionals and students came from a growing concern about the lack of representation for minorities in medical illustrations. This lack of representation has a profound impact on medical professionals, as they rely on these illustrations to develop a deep understanding of human anatomy and physiology. For example, medical illustrations that only feature images of caucasian bodies can lead to misdiagnosis and mistreatment of patients from minority backgrounds. This issue is particularly concerning given the increasing diversity of our population, and the need for medical professionals to have a deep understanding of the unique differences and variations in the human body. We believe that providing an immersive learning experience that includes diverse medical illustrations can help bridge this gap and provide a more accurate and inclusive education for all medical professionals and students.

What it does

After logging through the website, you have to subscribe monthly to access the courses and quizzes which include race, gender inclusive medical content for everyone. Through subscription, members gain bitcoins which can be used to study any course or quiz of their choice. Medical professionals also have the option to get bitcoins in exchange for creating course and quiz content on the platform. The website further offers need based scholarships to medical students in-need across the globe. The scholarship provides easy access to inclusive education to students who struggle to afford them.

How we built it

We started our project by brainstorming our ideas and paper prototyping. Afterward, we designed our UI in Adobe XD. Next, we started building our website with JavaScript and HTML. We then created our initial blockchain cryptocurrency using Chatgpt. Lastly, we worked on merging the website UI to the backend implementing spaced repetition and blockchain which still requires further development.

Challenges we ran into

Due to time limitations, it was hard to accomplish all the goals we had for MedX. We believe our app has more potential to grow moving forward without time constraints by working closely with healthcare professionals and VR developers to create those courses and VR experiences.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We had efficient and collaborative teamwork. Our work consisted of many discussions where everyone was able to contribute to the project. Our diverse perspectives and backgrounds shaped the project in incredible ways. Beyond everything, we had a great time together working overnight.

What we learned

We developed our teamwork and communication skills in ideation and development. From the technical perspective, we gained knowledge about blockchain, spaced repetition, client-server design, prototyping, and UI design with Adobe XD. We were also able to put the knowledge we gained through our computer and information science classes in university into solving real-life problems, which really helped us appreciate software engineering, web development, and entrepreneurship.

What's next for MedX: Inclusive Education for Everyone

In the long term, our app has the potential of establishing national and international non-profit partnerships for expanding our impact.

In the short term, we would envision testing our product with users to measure their interest to improve the user experience.
