Inspiration

In rural communities in the Philippines, there is a lack of accessibility to healthcare and internet connection. Where I'm from, Iloilo, Philippines, the lack of factual healthcare information has forced Filipinos in these areas to use homemade remedies and other dangerous healthcare practices which have made their illnesses worse most of the time. Medic Marie aims to make healthcare accessible for these Filipinos in their areas.

What it does

It is a personalized healthcare SMS A. I chatbot that provides Filipinos everywhere with reliable healthcare.

Features include:

1.) Geo-location- Can know exactly where you are in the Philippines (if you allow it). It is currently in Tagalog since it mainly serves Filipino communities.

2.) Healthcare personalization - Personalizes your healthcare experience in Medic Marie by consensually storing your data and using A. I to help create a one-of-one experience for you.

3.) Find a doctor- Find doctors and their contact info near your area that can help you.

4.) Give Medical Advice- Gives Medical Advice on any common illnesses you might have

5.) Know what medicine you need and pharmacies near you

6.) Medicine Finder- Find a pharmacy that has the medicine you need.

7.) 911 Emergency - Immediately contact healthcare services and emergency contact to come to you.

It also does not charge the user when using it since we want them to be able to use Medic Marie anytime. It is in Tagalog since it is primarily focused right now in the Philippines, but the language can be adjusted based on the region it is used in.

How we built it

Front-end + Back-end was built with Javascript (JS) since it is the defacto for web development.

We also used the Nexts Framework since it allows us to have front-end plus back-end all in one using JS.

We also used the Globe API to help with the SMS part.

SCSS for web design since it is like CSS but with more functionality.

We also use MongoDB as our database to store user profiles.

Challenges we ran into

We initially used Twilio for the SMS part, but it was too expensive.

The designing part was also a bit tedious to do.

Also the code didn't run at first in the web so we had to sort out some bugs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Overall, just finishing the app itself is something that we're proud of. To be able to help millions of Filipinos in our communities is something that makes us happy.

What we learned

Learn how to maximize the resources you have.

Simplicity is often the best way to execute a solution.

What's next for Medic Marie

We hope for it to be a global chatbot that can be specifically used in various third-world countries that have difficulty accessing reliable healthcare.

We hope to have a phone call function wherein the users can actually talk to the chatbot via call and the chatbot can do voice analysis on the user.
