Our Process
We heard you like videogames... and so do we! When we heard that the beginner track was tasked with making a bakery adventure game, we knew it was the perfect prompt for us. Lio is a hobbyist game developer, and June is a talented artist, making us the perfect team for a game jam.
As the main project dev, Lio didn't want to use the premade code for the beginner track. He felt that he had enough experience to strike out on his own, if not compete in one of the more advanced categories. For that reason, we decided to use Godot Engine to bring our game to life and give Lio more time to focus on coding gameplay.
Lio has competed at hackathons before, but the uniquely cozy atmosphere at Pearl Hacks got him inspired to do something a little different. He decided to use Dialogic 2, a plugin for Godot, to implement visual novel elements into the game. His main focus was on telling the story of his experience learning to code and expressing the growth he felt working with all of the incredible participants and mentors at Pearl Hacks. If you have ten minutes, he encourages you to play the game in its entirety to see how things pan out for the two daring protagonists.
This decision, however, had its drawbacks. By far the biggest challenge was making Dialogic and the minigames integrate correctly. Lio spent hours troubleshooting to make sure that each game and dialog played at the correct times without errors and correctly updated each other. Once he finally got that system up and running, June and Lio could spend the rest of their day working on the creative side of things.
Our Masterpiece
Welcome to Masterpiece, a game about rediscovering your love of food! You'll travel the world, make friends with talented chefs, challenge yourself to create new recipes, and end your adventure happier than ever.
The game opens with a visual novel segment. You meet the protagonist, "You", and your best friend, Pearl the chef. Both of you are dissatisfied with your current culinary experience and decide to travel the world together to seek out the meaning of cooking. The story takes you through three countries---America, France, and China---and in each you play a minigame. Within, you must move back and forth to catch the ingredients for your dish that fall from the sky, and each level gets more difficult. We challenge you to beat your high score!
Masterpiece is done, but we're not finished. Lio and June would like to polish the game by adding more minigames with a greater complexity of gameplay, more assets, and a soundtrack. With these additions, Masterpiece will grow from a jam project to a game in its own right.
