Inspiration

Growing up in a small town in Hawaii, the entire state always feels a few years behind in technology. People feel uninformed and left behind, especially with a technology hitting the mainstream like AI. However, there are definitely many who do keep up — and because of how community-oriented small towns like mine are, most people learn about news and technology only through local media, newspapers, and local events. The Master Gardener Society was the final piece of inspiration. A combination of all these things made me want to create a way for those few in the community who are informed to help the others who want to know more but feel left behind.

What it does

Main Street AI Society is a web app that helps volunteers find, coordinate, and create presentation materials to teach their local community about AI literacy topics like fraud, privacy, schooling, and more.

How we built it

Built using React and the Claude API, with Kiro handling the majority of the development through spec-driven development, agent hooks, and steering docs.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenges were validation and creation. I am personally not a CS major and have very little experience in web app development — so only thanks to Kiro was I able to build anything at all. Due to the short amount of time, the only validation I had was personal experience from my local community and Google Trends, where "what is AI" is still one of the most searched AI-related topics as of March 2026.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This was the first hackathon I have ever attended, and I was able to build a decent MVP for a real idea within about 13 hours.

What we learned

I learned a lot about vibe coding — what AI hooks, agents, and agentic AI are, and how to use them to build a real project. It was a genuinely eye-opening experience in how much is possible with the right tools even without a traditional CS background.

What's next for Main Street AI Society

Honestly, a project like this requires a lot of marketing and community outreach. From my experience creating social media accounts and spreading information about events, that is something I personally don't have the time for. So this will likely be the last night of Main Street AI Society.
