Inspiration
My inspiration for this project stemmed from the observation that many apartment residents are not diligent in sorting their waste properly. Witnessing the lack of awareness and commitment to recycling among apartment dwellers sparked my desire to develop a solution that educates and incentivizes them to engage in proper waste sorting practices.
What it does
Our project, RecycleChallenge, is a gamified platform designed to enhance waste sorting awareness among apartment residents. It offers an engaging experience where users match cartoon representations of different types of waste with corresponding recycling categories. By gamifying the process of waste sorting, RecycleChallenge aims to make learning about recycling fun and memorable for users of all ages.
How we built it
RecycleChallenge was built using a combination of web technologies and gamification principles. We developed an interactive user interface that presents users with various waste items depicted as cards. Users then match these cards with the appropriate recycling categories, learning about proper waste sorting as they progress through the game.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges we encountered was designing gameplay mechanics to effectively simulate the process of waste sorting while remaining engaging and intuitive for users. We brainstormed and iterated on different game dynamics, ultimately settling on a card-matching gameplay approach that closely mimics the real-life action of sorting waste into recycling bins.
In addition, we faced another challenge of introducing negative elements into the game to simulate real-life situations. We designed a "men in black" event, which appears when players make recycling mistakes, scattering the cards and causing confusion. This design aims to simulate the difficulties and challenges people may encounter in daily life, reminding players of the importance of waste sorting.
Furthermore, we introduced a competitive element between nations. The player's country is represented based on the language setting of their device, and the country with the highest recycling rate will have its flag displayed on the game's home page. The symbols representing the player's country in the game background also serve to alert players to the environmental impact of their own country.
Overcoming these challenges deepened our understanding of game design and led us to create a more engaging and educational gaming platform.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have developed a unique and innovative solution that addresses the important issue of waste sorting awareness in apartment communities. Our platform provides a fun and accessible way for users to learn about recycling practices while actively participating in a game-like environment.
What we learned
Through the development process of RecycleChallenge, we gained valuable insights into the complexities of waste management and the importance of raising awareness about proper waste sorting practices. We also deepened our understanding of gamification techniques and their potential to motivate behavior change in users.
What's next for RecycleChallenge: Empowering Waste Sorting Awareness
In the future, we envision expanding RecycleChallenge to include additional features such as leaderboards, challenges, and educational resources on environmental sustainability. We aim to collaborate with apartment communities, schools, and environmental organizations to promote widespread adoption of our platform and foster a culture of responsible waste management worldwide. By empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools to make informed recycling decisions, RecycleChallenge strives to create a cleaner and more sustainable future for generations to come.
